Rugby Fever – An Economic Game Changer?

The country is just loving the World Cup. Overseas visitors are here in big numbers, spending up all over the country. Ticket sales are on target, the games are great, and the AB's are looking good.

It just couldn't be better! Will it last once the final whistle has blown on October 23 or will it just be a flash in the pan?

You decide:

YES It will have lasting effect. The first condition is an All Black win in the final. Let's dream for a moment. It happens! We all fall in love with ourselves, keep spending and get headlong into an election campaign which looks a certainty for a second National government. In no time it's Christmas – nice weather, holidays, more spending, property market recovery. In a year's time we will see this as the turning point in our economic cycle.

NO Just a flash in the pan – even with an All Black win. After a week of self congratulations and ticker tape parades we just look at what confronts us. The economic indicators have not got better, retail sales collapse after the World Cup spend up. The election campaign bores us to tears. Our customers have still not paid their bills, credit card interest rates are still high, and the Reserve Bank decides to increase the OCR!
